It's the young people, those 15 - 49 who are most at risk. An education program has been underway for several years to try to curtail the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS through young people having unprotected sex with multiple partners.
Presenter: Brian Abbott
Speaker: Severine Leonardi, HIV/AIDS specialist with UNICEF Indonesia
LEONARDI: Papua and West Papua are two of the province with a generalised epidemic in Indonesia, and the HIV prevalence is estimated to be at a 2.4 persons among the 15-49 year old population, so that would translate year on basically as an estimated 30,000 people being infected. It's worth noting that we are the fastest growing epidemic in Indonesia. Overall the national aggregate is only estimated to be at 0.2 persons in the overall of Indonesia. Papua and West Papua are the two provinces with a generalised epidemic.
ABBOTT: Something like 20 times greater than the rest of the country, is that right?
